It's almost unfair to call this a "story"; it's a detached scene in the
The Redeemers plot arc. But it's a solidly written introduction to Hessus and Shadow.

Significant Cameos and References
- The "golden boy" Shadow speaks of is Mars. The other names mentioned are fellow The Redeemers members.
Trivia
- By Shadow's reference to "eight mages," this story takes place shortly before Sratelethien was recruited.
- Those with little experience with mountain snow might assume that Shadow's magical melting of "the snow around his paws" left him standing on dry, solid ground. Not so: The snowpack in the High Sierra routinely reaches a minimum depth of 6-10 feet in winter. "The snow around his feet" refers to that top layer of snow (especially during a storm) being loose and prone to sinkthrough -- once he took a step and his paws compressed snow until it would hold his weight, there would have been a substantial layer that hadn't been so compressed obscuring his feet and legs. Melting that layer would leave a small depression in the snow, leaving him still standing on snowpack but exposing his paws again.
